What is a Chief of Staff?

A chief of staff is a strategic addition to your leadership team. They bring business experience and expertise, outside perspective, and a unique skill set. Guiding implementation of strategic plans, their focus is on moving the business forward by keeping a close eye on goals, KPIs, and execution.

Why do you need a Chief of Staff?

Maybe you’ve got your strategic plan on lock—you know where you’re going and how you’re going to get there. But by Q2, your leadership team has lost sight of the plan from January and has started prioritizing other items. Or maybe you don’t have a strategic plan at all or somewhere in-between. A good Chief of Staff can lead you through the strategic planning process, break down the actions, and ensure they’re carried out. Think of your COS as a built-in accountability partner and coach for the goals you set in your business. (Don’t just take my word for it; Harvard Business Review agrees with me!)

How can your business benefit from a Chief of Staff?

By keeping their eye on the 10,000-foot view of overarching strategy and goals, COS have a very specific and narrow scope of work. They have an understanding of the business’s day-to-day operations in the context of the overall goals and KPIs, but have their sleeves rolled up to ensure implementation by removing barriers and finding efficiencies. A COS also can be an additional resource and mentor for the team—not their manager, but a problem-solver and listening ear.

Why am I the best choice for your Chief of Staff?

I have always had a knack for seeing the big picture in context of the day-to-day. Or maybe vice versa. Knowing the greater why for specific tasks and outcomes is key to getting a team to perform. And understanding why an organization chooses specific goals and then getting in the weeds to make those goals a reality is my bread and butter. I know how to bridge the gap from plan to realization.

What do I get out of being a Chief of Staff?

I’m what we call “multi-passionate”. I’m happiest and in my flow when I can hummingbird across an org. I want to understand the people and processes and how we can best leverage all of it to reach our goals. As a generalist, I know a little bit about a lot of things and can step in to fill gaps throughout an organization—but I’m not remotely afraid to ask questions and get help. My curiosity tends to outweigh my ego… most of the time.
